CLIENT: Bovis Lend Lease CLIENT REP: Peter Kyte CONTACT NO: (07) 3225 7100 ENGINEER: ARUP VALUE: $3,500,000 DURATION: May 2004 – October 2004

The Millennium Arts Project works included site clearing, site decontamination / remediation & bulk excavation. During site clearing/demolition all concrete was stockpiled onsite and crushed using a Nordberg LT1213. This process ensured the sustainable recycling of the onsite concrete demo and created over 7000tonnes of quality crushed concrete which was used a hardstand across the entire site. The site remediation process was conducted under the supervision of the (CPLG) Contaminated Land Practitioner Group -ARUP and saw the removal of over 48,000tonnes of contaminated material. The impacted soil contaminants ranged from hydrocarbons to heavy metals and the disposal and site tracking of these materials was all coordinated by Shamrock Civil Engineering. The bulk earthworks were carried out at the completion of the site remediation and over 20,000m3 of material was removed from site. Due to the position of the site adjacent to the Brisbane River environmental controls were of the highest priority especially during the decontamination phase of the works. Shamrock Civil Engineering implemented all the necessary environmental measures to prevent the cross contamination of impacted soils within the surrounding areas focusing on the importance of silt & erosion control.

Shamrock Civil were contracted by Adco to widen Gympie Road, & expand existing turning lanes within the middle of Gympie Road. The project was constructed under main roads jurisdiction. Due to the high traffic volumes on Gympie Road; the traffic management, safety & planning of the works were crucial. To enable the works to be performed without disruption to the traffic, lane widths were reduced via temporary line marking to provide room for the traffic barriers & working space to perform the works. Once Stage 1 (Western Road Widening) was complete, traffic was re-diverted to allow Stage 2 to be performed (Extension of turning lane into traffic island). The pavement design consisted of deep lift asphalt overlaid with an asphalt wearing course. All works were completed on time & to main roads satisfaction, with no incidents or delays to the busy traffic on Gympie Road.
