Situated at the University of Queensland St Lucia Campus, the Australian Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology is a cutting edge research facility. Shamrock Civil contract works for the project included bulk excavation, sewer, stormwater and carpark as well as roadworks.
Due to the confined site restrictions a large amount of coordination between Shamrock Civil and the client as well as all other subcontractors on site was essential on a daily basis. Following the initial bulk excavation for the building platform and service tunnel, Shamrock Civil installed a stormwater system comprising of overland flow inlet and outlet structures, reinforced concrete pipes and culverts. The installation of a sewer line and 6 No. sewer structures diverted the existing sewer line in order to allow the construction of the new 6 story building to progress.
All works to the AIBN project were completed on time, within budget and to the highest safety standards.

This 40 story building was constructed on a 7740m2 site which fronts
North Quay and the Brisbane River with half of the site devoted to
public space.
Shamrock Civil were awarded the External Roadwork & Footpath package.
All demolition was carried out in areas which were abundant with live
services without incident. Demolition consisted of the removal of
existing concrete and asphalt, removal of redundant services and
removal of existing heritage kerb for reuse.
The Road works comprised of the following activities:
- Construction of road widening at Adelaide St and North Quay.
- Constructing on new bus inlet bay George St.
The Footpath works comprised of the following activities:
- Excavating under road, kerb and to the edge of the building slab
to required level and placement of roadbase material to form the
adjacent slab extending to the back of Kerb.
- Installation of porphyry kerb and footing
- Form and install concrete channel
All works were carried out within a small, congested work zone which
presented many obstacles throughout the project, however all critical
dates were achieved.

As part of the stage 5 Westfield Chermside expansion, SCE were awarded
the contract for bulk excavation works and the installation of a 530m
long trunk drainage system to tie into an existing culvert system and
divert water from a creek under the proposed new shopping centre
extension (stage 5), through a twin cell culvert system/sediment basin
and drain into Somerset creek.
The trunk drainage line consisted of 7 No. reinforced concrete
structures accommodating a 2.100m dia pipeline and culverts ranging
from 3.000 x 2.550m to 4.800m x 3.600m in size. An insitu
reinforced concrete base was constructed using traditional methods of
construction and the precast culvert elements ranging from 7t to 13.5t
were placed sequentially using a 200T crane to allow for deep
excavation conditions.
The largest of the structures on the culvert line, headwall 5/1 was a
reinforced concrete structure 21 x 22m with 6 No. columns and a sloped
base slab which formed a 1m deep sediment basin to minimise the
environmental impact on the creek. The original design was a reinforced
concrete roof structure but due to continual poor weather conditions,
Shamrock Civil put forward a design proposal for the installation of a
precast roof. This proposal was approved and 600mm thick precast roof
elements were installed covered with a 100mm structural concrete
screed.
Working within a live creek environment presented many obstacles
throughout the duration of the works, however all critical dates and
safety standards were achieved.

As part of the stage 5 Westfield Chermside expansion, SCE were awarded the internal roads and carpark contract. These works involved close coordination with the client to meet their specific critical dates but also to enable continued progress in all areas of the site. The roads package involved both works for Brisbane City Council and Main Roads as well as internal roads and 2 separate ongrade carparks for Westfield Design & Construction direct. Over 1.5km of stormwater lines, approximately 15,000m2 of asphalt pavement and 2000m2 of concrete pavement were placed throughout the site.
The stage 5 expansion will increase the centre from approximately 79,000 sqm to approx. 116,000sqm, making this one of Queensland’s largest regional shopping centres.
"The opening day was a great success, and the complimentary speeches from Mr Stephen Lowry and Mr Bob Jordan at the opening should be passed on to all those involved on just how good the Centre looked from a standard of quality and design benchmark which was delivered on the day." Allan Robertson, Senior Project Manager

Tradecoast Central, located on the former Brisbane Airport site adjacent to the Gateway Arterial Motorway is a joint venture between the Brisbane City Council and Prime Development Corporation which will provide on completion, an area in excess of 110 hectares of a planned industrial community.
Shamrock Civil were awarded the demolition and site preparation package with the main scope of works being the removal and processing of 15,850m3 of existing concrete and 6000m3 of existing asphalt pavements within the site.
25,000m3 of existing spoil material was located on top of the existing pavements in various locations. It was necessary to remove this material to allow the removal of the pavements in these locations. The fill material was carted from the runway and placed and compacted in accordance with level 1 geotechnical supervision in areas of future development within the Tradecoast central site.
2000m3 of the stockpiled material consisted of acid sulphate affected soils. It was necessary to lime treat this soil on site before it was carted to the fill area. Bioremediation was required on 1800m3 of soil located at the former Fuel Depot. This consisted of spreading the soil, treating it with fertilizer at 1kg/m3 and turning twice per week for 5 weeks.
All works were completed on time and to a high quality to meet the requirements of Prime Developments.

This heritage listed building was designed and built as an exhibition hall in 1891 and then converted to a museum and subsequently a concert hall. It is located on a 1.5 hectare site at the intersection of Bowen Bridge Road and Gregory Terrace.
Shamrock Civil were awarded the civil and roadworks package component for the refurbishment of the Old Queensland Museum. The initial works included the demolition of existing asphalt, concrete and redundant services. As this is a heritage listed building, it was vital that all demolition works were carried out with the utmost care to ensure no damage was caused to the building structure.
As part of our works it was necessary to install 150m of stormwater line and associated pits. As this is an existing building, the stormwater works were completed under difficult conditions including boring under existing services and excavation in rock.
Other works included: • Replacement of Roadway • Replacement of Kerb and Channel • Concrete parking bays
The concert hall remained operational during the work, so it was vital that works were programmed and executed to cause minimal disruptions. |
