The Brisbane International Airport Expansion Project consisted of two separate construction sites, the Northern Concourse and the ITBX extension. All works carried out on each Construction Site were performed in accordance with The Strict Regulations of Brisbane Airport Commission and Bovis Lend Lease.
Due to the volume of material being moved from each site & the volume of Traffic expected, a detailed Traffic Management plan was put in place prior to the commencement of works.
The Construction of the Temporary Access Roads comprised the following:
- Demolition of existing road shoulders;
- Construction of roads on sand;
- Shaping of embankments to form swale drains; and
- Placement of Ironman Barriers to separate airport traffic from construction traffic.
The Bulk Earthworks comprised the following:
- Demolition of existing Car Parks and Runway Aprons;
- Transplanting existing trees off site;
- Bulk excavation (Approx. 81,500m³) for the new Building Platforms;
- Placement of excavated material as Preload; and
- Install Construction Hardstands to Building Platforms.
Challenges associated with the project include:
- Coordination of service tie-ins and commissionings with Laing O'Rourke and BAC Operations;
- Working amongst multiple existing services, which required temporary support and diversion;
- Excavation in sand, requiring sheet piling, shoring; and
- Working within a high water table and tidal flow through the stormwater system, requiring spear pointing and dewatering from sumps.
Excavation of the Services Trench comprised the following:
- Installation of a spear system to dewater the trench prior to commencement of excavation; and
- The trench excavation was 7m deep and 30m wide at the top of batters.
Storm water works consisted of the following activities:
- Laying of storm water lines for new extension at the Northern Concourse; and
- Connection to existing storm water lines.
Alterations to Baggage Handling Roads consisted of the following activates:
- Widen existing baggage road;
- Line marking alterations; and
- Landscaping.
The works here had to be carried out on airside, which meant having security in place at all times. Because this road was still active the works had to be carried out as to not disturb the flow of Airport Traffic during the busy hours. This meant most activities had to happen out of hours.
