Gold Coast Rapid Transit

CLIENT:                  Baulderstone

VALUE:                   $5,900,000

DURATION:            February 2011 - Current

SCE were engaged by Baulderstone Pty Ltd to deliver the stormwater portion of the early works for the gold coast rapid transit system. All existing stormwater services had to be upgraded and lowered below the zone of influence of the proposed light rail corridor.

The stormwater package included the installation of 1500m of stormwater pipes, ranging from 375mm up to 2100mm diameter. All pipes and associated structures were constructed within 1Km of the coast line, which is treated as an aggressive environment (class c) in line with the DMR and Australian standards.  The works incorporated 2 major reinforced concrete chambers to be built below the ground water level on either side of the gold coast highway connecting to the cast insitu outfall headwall that was to be built below the mean tide level. During the construction works the Gold Coast highway could not be closed, so the 3 parallel 1600mm diameter pipe lines between the chambers were constructed by micro tunnelling under the highway. Large sheet pile pits (11m x 7m) with spear point dewatering systems were constructed to facilitate the tunnelling works. The headwall below the tide level was constructed by building a sheet pile cofferdam with spear point dewatering to create a dry construction enclosure.

As the works were carried out in a residential area adjacent to the live highway  all of Shamrocks works were carried out in live traffic conditions with a large number of known and unknown in ground services.
