Hinze Dam Upper Intake Access Road |
|
CLIENT: Hinze Dam Alliance (Thiess)
VALUE: $898,000
DURATION: August 2008 - April 2010
As part of the Hinze Dam upgraded the dam wall is raised by approximately 15m, which will increase storage capacity and provide flood mitigation.
As part of the upgrade Shamrock Civil was contracted to construct a 350m sealed road along the side of a hill, providing access to the Upper Intake Tower, which was raised by 15m.
Constructing the road required Shamrock Civil to:
- Extensively tree clear the extent of works;
- Cut and fill the first 70m of road into the side of a steep slope with a 10m drop;
- Cut 280m of road into the side of the hill to a depth of approximately 8m and at the same time shaping and stabilising batters and benches under the guidance of the client's geotechnical engineer;
- Supply and install a multi-cell culvert (3 / 450 x 1200 RCBC) 12m length;
- Supply and install 247m guardrail, 112m security fence and gate; and
- Bulk and detailed excavation for the access bridge abutment.
A large portion of the excavation encountered blue rock which required extensive rock breaking work and blasting. A total of 15,000m3 of material was excavated from the upper intake access road.
The difficult site geography and close proximity to the reservoir required that Shamrock Civil develop and adhere to strict client approved OH&S and Environmental Management Plans.
